A record number of 34 attendees signed in at the meeting held at Alma Meadows Mobile Home Park. (There were 33 last month!)

Stamp-based door prizes were given out and Tom Smith, the club president, provided additional financial information about the national stamp show that the Mesa Stamp Club co-sponsored last month. Amongst other good news, we found our that the hotel meeting room cost was somewhat less than anticipated.

Also, next year, according to both Toms Smith and Tom Reyman (Show Chairman), the dealers who were at this year's event, want to come back and dealers who couldn't get in this season are anxious to participate. Next year's Arizona National Stamp Show will be once again the 2nd weekend in February, 14th thru 16th, 2025.

After those reports and the usual auction, meeting attendees were able to Buy-Sell-and Trade stamps, and related items.

Next month's meeting on April 17 will feature a program of stamp-based trivia questions and there will be a prize given out at the end.

Tom Reyman reported on the upcoming ARIZONA NATIONAL STAMP SHOW that the clubs are holding. The dealer reservations are sold out, but there are still some Frame/Display opportunities. Also, he reported that the show will be listed in the publications of Linn's and the Arizona Philatelic Society. Also, BJ's Stamps will be contributing three lockers for the dealers at the show and that after the show's over, the club will retain those lockers. BJ's will also be giving us some door prizes.

On the subject of involving Scouts officially, Tom has checked into it, and it won't be happening.

President Tom Smith presented the program for the meeting and it consisted of postage due stamps and other classical stamps, and this led to a brief discussion of other U.S. stamps. An auction of stamps being sold by members then occurred, as usual.

The program for the next meeting will be a Show and Tell for members and guests to bring in their stamps and tell the rest of us about them.

Over 30 members and family attended the annual Christmas Pot Luck. There was more than enough freshly sliced ham, turkey and delicious chili. Of course there were all the wonderful breads, munchies, vegetable dips and similar - and last but not least - the holiday cakes, cookies even candies! A good time was had by all!

There were 21 members in attendance.

President Tom Reyman discussed progress of the preparations for the AZ Stamp Show which is being co-sponsored by the club and will take place February 16-18, 2024. In part, he reported that the plans for the layout of the floor has been completed. He also asked for volunteers to work before and at the show and said that volunteers from the club would also get a lunch voucher. Tom said that each day's admission to the show would be $1.00.

Tom Smith presented a program involving the history of the Phoenix Stamp Club, which evolved into the Phoenix Philatelic Association and shared the information that PPA and its predecessor - combined - is 100 years old, having been founded in 1923. After additional discussion, we were reminded that the Mesa Stamp Club started in March, 1973 and is therefore 50 years old.

The next meeting will be December 20 and the club's annual pot luck will take place. Members volunteered to bring various dishes to the meeting. It was also decided that there won't be a gift exchange this year.

The monthly stamp auction took place and the meeting adjourned.

Presentation made by club Treasurer: The Liberty Bell in both Hispanic Heritage and American history.

September 15th is the start of Hispanic Heritage month. This is in recognition of “Los Campones Del Dolores (the cry of Doloress(?) (unsure of spelling), The ringing of the bell of Campana de Dolores on September 15, 1810.

During the early 1800's to 1810 , the Spanish government in Europe was either fighting or being controlled by the Napoleonic French government. The local cabal or leaders wanted to protest and overthrow the ruling Spanish government in Mexico. A local parish priest in Campana De Dolores rang the local church bell on midnight of September 15, 1810 to alert the populace the start of the Mexican Independence revolution .

A stamp showing the bell of Campana De Dolores was issued jointly by the USA and the Mexico government on September 15, 1960 to commemorate 150th anniversary Mexico Independence. The annual tradition continues where the Mexican President ceremonial rings the parish church bell of Campana De Dolores at 11 pm on September 15th.

Mexico Postal issued an Airmail stamp in 1976 showing the Philadelphia Liberty Bell . This airmail stamp commemorate the 200th anniversary of USA Independence. Facts were presented about the Philadelphia Liberty Bell. The Philadelphia Liberty Bell was created in 1750 to commemorate the 50th anniversary Philadelphia Charter of Rights. Metal craftsmen Stowe & Pass recast the the bell after it developed its first crack. The Liberty Bell has the Bible verse , “Proclaim Liberty throughout the Land”. Claims abound saying the Liberty Bell was rang on the signing of the USA Deceleration of Independence. Circa 1837 to 1840's the Abolitionist (anti slavery ) movement adopted the Liberty Bell as their symbol. On February 23, 1846, George Washington's birthday, the Philadelphia Liberty Bell developed it most noticeable crack. The Treasurer showed commemorative stamps and postcards of the 1926 celebration of the 150th Independence anniversary in Philadelphia. The 1926 stamp was the first USA commemorative to show the USA Liberty Bell. The postcards showed the entrance archway that had a huge replica of the Liberty Bell.

Main Program by club President Tom: Tom stated that tonight's meeting was supposed be a Show and Tell. Since Tom was the only member to bring exhibits, the Postage and Postal History Show and Tell will be rescheduled for the October 19, 2022 meeting. Each member is encouraged to bring postage and/or postal history items they can discuss for 3 to 5 minutes.

Tom's Exhibits: Tom first showed Airmail Covers from Early Canadian Airmail cover: October 1, 1924 flight from Estevan, Saskatchewan to Winnipeg, Manitoba. Estevan's merchants and leaders wanted to promote the great coal reserves to influential person in Manitoba. They created at least 200 postal cards/ promotional envelopes. The flight was supposed to be from Estevan to Winnipeg which is approximate 430 km / 267 miles and would take 4 to 6 hours. Unfortunately the plane landed after 10 miles due to engine trouble. When the air pilot tried to take off again, the plane's landing gear hit a rock and broke. The plane was unable to travel by air. The resourceful postal clerks transmitted the postal covers by mail rail cars.

The event was effective promoting Estevan's economic resources. There are at 3 types of airmail covers. The most plentiful is with a red label sticker. Other rarer are No red label, ones with the pilot's signature, and rarest Pilot's “E.A. Alton” signature with a red label.

Tom also mentioned about the various printing and perforation errors of USA and world postage he collects. These oddities include, gutter pair, lack of perforation, and misplaced perforation.

An Auction was held and great deals abound.

There is a sign up sheet for volunteering at ARIPEX. Club Members are encouraged to volunteer. In the past, any volunteering club member that volunteers at the various information booths have received reduced admission costs.

Paper work was distributed to get volunteers. Volunteers are needed for Thursday February 17, set up of exhibits. Volunteers are needed for break down of exhibits on Sunday February 20.

For questions about ARIPEX contact Kevin. As of January 19, all slots for competitive exhibits were reportedly filled. There are slots available for non- competitive exhibits.

American Philatelic Association is having their Board Elections. Mesa stamp Club gets to submit a ballot. As of January 2022 there is only one candidate for each office. By a unanimous vote, after no discussion, it was agreed that the Mesa Stamp Club Officers will fill out the candidates running for each office.

Phoenix Stamp Club meets the 2nd Tues and 4th Wednesday , 6:30 pm to 9 pm at North Baptist Church; Life Center – Upper Floor.

Presentation by Charles “Ted” about the postal history of Newfoundland 1857 to 1949

Fascinating discussion about the last independent Canadian province . Newfoundland was the second British colony in North America. . Newfoundland had many high quality postage stamps showing the history and culture of Canada. Historical figures include John Cabot. Gander International Airport on Newfoundland, played an important on Operation Yellow Ribbon. Operation Yellow Ribbon was when U.S. Bound commercial airlines were forced to land in Canada after the USA closed their airspace after September 11, 2001 events.

February 2022 Stamp Program will also be conducted by Charles “Ted”. The Topic will either be postal History of Iceland or Foreign Stamps produced by the American Banknote Company.

Auction was held. Great Deals for all.

The Secretary noted and showed the membership the receipts for having filed the Arizona Corporation Commission annual report and the IRS Form 990-N (reports filed on time).

A mention of current dues was made to the membership reminding them that they are now due.

Guest Ward C was introduced by Jack S, and together they gave a presentation of Ward's special collection of the Palomar Mountain Observatory stamp (Scott No. 966), and an article written by Jack S for the United States Stamp Society publication, the Specialist (April 2015 issue).

The order was arranged by when everyone started to collect stamps, with those starting in their younger years going first. A gift exchange and friendly conversations were enjoyed by all.

The treasurer confirmed that nothing out of the ordinary from the prior meeting was noted, and she related the evening's activities to the Secretary via email at a later date.

There was no program for the evening, and no other business, new or old, was brought to the floor. However, tonight's program was supplemented by a lively auction with proceeds to benefit the club, and there were a good number of interesting stamps, small collections, and other philatelic items. The club added $125.75 to its general fund from the auction proceeds.

President Leland S called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. The Vice President, Tony K, confirmed a total count of 32 members present including the Officers. A Secretary’s Report of the last meeting was read by Jack S, Secretary, and the Treasurer’s report was read by Marsha C, Treasurer. A general discussion of stamp news of the day was shared including the topic of postal rate increases to come in the near future. Door prizes were distributed including the grand door prize, which was won by Member Kim F.

No program was scheduled for the evening.

The President then brought up the subject of the Club’s moving forward with technology in how communication was sent to the General Members. Vice President Tony K solicited postage from members who might have extra stamps they may wish to donate. Secretary, Jack S, shared his request for Postal Cards that he could use to run through his printer. A show of hands was taken to see what members used email accounts. It was discussed that the Secretary was working with the Member Roster to note those who would be interested in receiving meeting reminders via email vs mail through the USPS, and for making a partial conversion to email while still maintaining standard USPS mail for those who wished to continue to receive correspondence (i.e. meeting notices) in paper form.

The President then called for a discussion regarding the progress of Incorporating the Organization, which was a process approved in its entirety during the November 2014 meeting. Secretary, Jack S, brought forth completed documents for discussion and consideration, including (a) Articles of Incorporation (to be filed with the Arizona Corporation Commission), (b) Statutory Agent Acceptance, signed by the Secretary who is to be the Statutory Agent, (c) Certificate of Disclosure (required by the ACC), (d) new Mesa Stamp Club, Inc. Constitution, and (e) new Mesa Stamp Club, Inc. Bylaws.

The proposed Articles of Incorporation were explained and read out loud to the Membership by the Secretary, to be incorporated as of March 18, 2015. A brief discussion followed. There being no objections to the content of the Articles of Incorporation, a Motion was made by Member Dr. Stevan A to accept the Articles as read and to file them with the ACC, and the Motion was seconded by Member Jerald S. The President asked for a vote and all 32 Members in attendance unanimously voted for passing the Motion.

The proposed new Mesa Stamp Club, Inc. Constitution and Bylaws in Draft form were distributed amongst the Membership in paper copy format and time was allowed for reading the documents.

The President called for a discussion of the new Mesa Stamp Club, Inc. Constitution and Bylaws, and there were no questions or comments. There being no objections to the format or contents of either the Constitution or the Bylaws for “Mesa Stamp Club, Inc.,” Member Kevin Lesk made a Motion to accept the new Constitution and Bylaws as drafted and presented as the governing documents of the newly formed Corporation, to become effective March 18, 2015. The Motion was seconded by Member Kenneth O. The President asked for a vote and all 32 Members in attendance unanimously voted for passing the Motion.

No other business, new or old, was brought to the floor. A lively auction followed with many interesting stamps, small collections, and other philatelic items. The meeting was then adjourned.

The Meeting was brought to order by the President, and treasurer’s and secretary’s reports were read.The President introduced five guests among the almost 30 individuals in attendance, including Kristen Patterson, Sequoia (California) Stamp Club member and Director at Large of the American Philatelic Society, who is visiting Mesa for the upcoming ARIPEX stamp exhibition to be held this coming weekend from Friday, February 20th through Sunday the 22nd, (Refer to the "News" tab, above, for more information about the exhibition and a link to the ARIPEX website).

Bill W. spoke briefly about the experience of volunteers who moved the equipment and supplies from storage over to the Mesa Convention Center that morning, noting that - while it was well organized - additional / younger assistance will be necessary in the future.

No formal Club business, new or old, was brought to the attention of the Board and members in attendance.

An interesting program about the United States stamps used / overprinted for the Canal Zone postal system by Dr. Stevan A.

A lively auction followed, and the meeting was adjourned.

The Meeting was brought to order by the President, and treasurer’s and secretary’s reports were read. The President introduced the annual election of officers, and called for additions and / or volunteers for any of the positions. There was one additional member/candidate who volunteered to be added to the ballot, which was for the position of Secretary. A program was enjoyed by all, which was given by Bill W. about the U.S. Naval Ship U.S.S. Guam. Formal ballots were prepared and distributed. The current board members were re-elected, with the exception of Secretary. The new candidate was elected to the position of Secretary. All officers were elected by a material majority of votes. The Board of Directors voted into office to be effective 18 February 2015 were as follows:

This was the club’s annual Holiday potluck party. With the celebratory atmosphere in the air from the spread of dishes brought forth by the members from their kitchens, the meeting was brought to order by the President, and treasurer’s and secretary’s reports were read. No new or formal business was brought before the membership during the meeting. In lieu of a program, a grand pot luck dinner was enjoyed by everyone in attendance, and a gift exchange of small philatelic articles via a bingo distribution game was undertaken. A lot of “bingo” claims were called out by the membership and their guests and the exchange or selection of the gifts was held until everything was distributed. The celebration was certainly a lively event!

The Meeting was brought to order by the President, and treasurer’s and secretary’s reports were read. The president introduced a discussion about officially incorporating the organization. Jack S, an Arizona CPA and club member spoke in regard to the processes that would be undertaken and that he would donate his time to assist in the process. A discussion was held about the club being considered a “social organization” under IRS regulations, and would not be able to receive “tax deductible donations,” only to operate as a non-profit entity where the net profits are free from income tax. A motion was brought to the floor to proceed with the organization’s incorporation with the State of Arizona Corporation Commission and to register with the IRS for non-profit status as a 501(c)(7) Social Organization. The Motion was seconded, and a vote was taken. With a material majority in favor, the motion was passed. A program was enjoyed by all. Lively discussions about philatelic news and auctions followed.

A call to order by the President was made, and reports were read. A treasurer's report was given. Door prizes were awarded and refreshments were served. Approximately 20 members were in attendance.

An informal survey was taken of Mesa Stamp Club members who are also members of the American Philatelic Society. Since the Mesa Stamp Club is a member organization of the APS, the annual dues can be covered, in part or in full, by a count of MSC members who are also members of the APS.

A discussion was entertained regarding the improvement of methods used to announce meetings and to provide other information to the members, although no formal motions were entertained.

The program was presented about the History of USA Scott No. FA1 - Certified Mail Stamp, First Day of Issue, June 6, 1955. Handouts were provided and additional information about related topics was shared by the members.

The membership entertained a discussion of current events and new stamp issues, and they briefly shared some technical information. Areas of interest discussed included the status of the 100 sheets of the "un-inverted" version of the popular $2 denomination of the Inverted Jenny stamp, which were issued in September 2013 by the USPS. It was mentioned that 18 of the 100 sheets have been identified to date.

A lively auction with a good variety of member-provided material was presented by Tony K. and Tom S.

Meeting opened by Tony. We had about 27 in attendance. Minutes: read by Les and approved. Treasurer's report: Checking 667.54; Savings 509.51, Petty Cash 183.08, read by Marsha and approved. Philatelic News: Stamp Clubs picnic at Papago Park 10/26 at Ramada 16. Dan took his FDC exhibit to a book signing and has another showing on 10/22 at ASU Memorial Union, 7-9 p.m. Kevin passed around flyers for the 2014 ARIPEX - Feb 21-23 at Mesa Convention Center Door Prizes: Brad, Bill, Evelyn. Ron won the Lottery so next month it will be $2.00. New business: Tony passed around food lists for the Christmas Potluck for volunteers to sign what kind they will bring. Christmas Potluck and party will be 12/18. Program: Bill on Arizona Related Stamps. His first section was on the State Centennial Program. Then he showed John Wayne items for he has property near Stanfield. Tom shared that when his mother was a bartender she often saw John Wayne. He had stamps related to Tombstone, Kitt Peak and other attractions, the Oatman donkeys, Missions, Picacho Peak Confederate re-enactment. Animals and trees of Arizona were on other pages. These were on album pages he passed around. Tony had him do the program early so there would be time for Auction. Auction began at 8 p.m. with Kevin, Tom and Tony as auctioneers. Kevin's comedy patter was provided at no extra cost. Les, Secretary We do appreciate donations of refreshments and drinks. Donations of door prizes should be given to Leland.
